MCA to speak up against RUU 355 at BN meeting

KUALA LUMPUR, Mar 29: MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has reiterated the party’s position that any proposed amendment to the Syariah Court (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355) must not contravene the Federal Constitution.

“This is the bottom line of MCA ie any amendments must be in line with Federal Constitution,” he told reporters after chairing the MCA Presidential Council meeting,

Liow also said that the party has formed a consensus voice with the Chinese community regarding any proposed changes to Act 355, whereby it has been reiterated that any amendment fall within the ambit of the Federal Constitution.

“Thus, MCA and the Chinese community are strongly opposed against the version which PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has proposed,” he added.

Liow, who is Bentong MP, said that “regardless of who proposed the amendments to Act 355, the new proposal should pass through the BN government, Cabinet and must also comply with the Federal Constitution.

When asked whether MCA would raise this issue at the BN Supreme Council meeting today, he said: “MCA will speak out the position of MCA and the Chinese community.”

Liow added that MCA will review the contents of the BN meeting before coming up with an outcome.

“All policy matters of the government should reached a consensus between all BN parties.

“This is the BN spirit. We hope that this spirit will be maintained until the end,” Liow added.
